Gerhard Richter: October 18, 1977 examines the artist's celebrated cycle of fifteen paintings made in 1988 in response to the deaths of members of the Red Army Faction in Stuttgart-Stammheim prison on 18 October 1977. Through blurred, monochrome images drawn from archival photographs, Richter confronts the relationship between painting, historical memory and political violence.

Published to accompany the exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York (5 November 2000–30 January 2001), the book features an extensive essay by Robert Storr and reproductions of the paintings alongside documentary imagery.
