Carlijn Jacobs’s work has always been an exercise in reconfiguring reality. Her high-gloss fashion images present a subversive, surrealist vision of beauty, with models that appear both captivating and cryptic, their made-up faces foregrounding the uncanny dreamscapes they tend to inhabit.

With her latest book, Making Faces, Jacobs goes back to the origins of her vision – face painting. Art directed by Christopher Simmonds and styled by Robbie Spencer, the book is a joyful collection of images featuring children embodying a variety of different characters and looks.
