New York Then 1986–1992 brings together a series of black-and-white portraits made by photographer Vivienne Maricevic in New York during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Working closely with her subjects, Maricevic photographed trans performers, artists and sex workers in the dressing rooms, apartments and nightlife spaces of downtown Manhattan and Times Square.

These intimate portraits explore self-presentation, desire and agency. At once bold and vulnerable, the photographs portray people actively shaping how they wish to be seen, while documenting a particular moment in the city's cultural and social history. The first edition is screen-printed in Mexico City, lending the publication a distinctive tactile quality.
