Sentō are popular urban public bathhouses where people bathe naked, separated by gender, in a succession of hot, cold, foaming, electric, and scented baths. Beyond being places for ablutions and relaxation, these baths are essential to the social fabric of their neighborhoods. Despite their deep roots in Japanese society, sentō are currently facing significant challenges, forcing many to close their doors each year. Fortunately, a new generation of sentō managers is working to revitalize them.
