ATACAMA is an images and videos series captured in the desert. By traveling to Chile, Maud reconfigures her studio, gives it another function. Her work fosters an active back-and-forth between rock, stars, and onlooker. The sky makes the desert whole. In its remoteness and its aridity, the Atacama desert is a singular space for astronomical observation. The sky there is so clear that the cosmos seems as close and immediate as the rocks. This affinity, this negation of distance, is what inspires the photographer and assigns her images the role of intermediary. To look at the stars is not merely to observe, but to communicate: the images and the light are both messages and means of affecting the cosmic order. This process is what plays out on a smaller scale in Maud’s images. Each vision projects us toward a new point in space, and the light, in its journey, seems to carry along what it illuminates.
